How to scale your Facebook ads for Black Friday without resetting the learning phase
Every November the same thing happens in thousands of Facebook ad accounts. A Shopify store has an ad set that has been quietly working for weeks. The owner wants to make the most of Black Friday, so on the Monday before, they triple the budget. By Wednesday the ad set says Learning, the cost per purchase has doubled, and the best ad they had is gone at the most expensive moment of the year.
Here is the short version. Big budget jumps restart the learning phase. Small ones generally do not. You can get from a normal budget to a Black Friday budget without resetting anything, but only in steps of about 20 percent, and that takes weeks, not days. For Black Friday on 27 November 2026, the date that matters is the end of October.
Why a winning ad set falls over when you scale it
Meta needs about 50 purchases in the seven days after the last significant edit before an ad set leaves the learning phase. Until it gets there, results jump around. That is the week your ads work on Monday and are dead by Thursday.
A significant edit is anything that makes Meta start that count again: new targeting, a new ad, a new optimisation event, a new bid strategy, pausing for a week or more, and a large budget change. In practice, raising a budget by about 20 percent or less generally does not reset it. Raise it by 200 percent and you are starting again from zero.
That is the whole trap. The ad set you want to scale is the one that finally got out of learning. The fastest way to scale it is the one move that throws it back in.
The 20 percent maths
If each step is 20 percent and you wait three days between steps to check your cost per purchase is holding, this is how long it takes:
| To reach | Steps of 20% | Days at one step every 3 days |
|---|---|---|
| 2x your budget | 4 | 12 |
| 3x your budget | 6 | 18 |
| 4x your budget | 8 | 24 |
| 5x your budget | 9 | 27 |
So a store spending 50 dollars a day that wants to spend 200 dollars a day through Black Friday week needs 24 days of steady increases to get there without a reset.
Working back from Black Friday 2026
Black Friday is Friday 27 November, Thanksgiving is the day before, and Cyber Monday is 30 November. Most stores open their sale around 20 November. Here is where a 50 dollar a day budget ends up by 20 November, stepping up 20 percent every three days, depending on when you start:
| Start stepping up on | Budget by 20 November |
|---|---|
| 1 October | about 920 dollars a day |
| 15 October | about 450 dollars a day |
| 27 October | about 200 dollars a day (4x) |
| 1 November | about 150 dollars a day (3x) |
| 10 November | about 85 dollars a day |
| 16 November | about 60 dollars a day |
You do not need to scale to the top of that table. The point is the shape. Start in October and you have room to spare. Start in the second week of November and 20 percent steps cannot get you anywhere useful, which is exactly why so many people panic and make the big jump.
Before you scale, check you have a winner to scale
Scaling only works on an ad set that is out of learning. On a small budget, many never get there. If your cost per purchase is 30 dollars, 50 purchases a week means spending about 1,500 dollars a week, or around 214 dollars a day, in that one ad set.
A store spending 60 dollars a day split across five ad sets is putting 12 dollars a day into each. None of them will ever see 50 purchases in a week. So the first job in October is often not scaling at all. It is putting your money into fewer ad sets, so at least one of them gets enough sales to settle. That consolidation is itself a significant edit, which is another reason to do it now and not in November.
How to step up without breaking anything
- Pick the ad set or campaign you are going to scale. It should be out of learning and have a cost per purchase you are happy to pay at a higher budget.
- Raise the budget by no more than 20 percent.
- Wait two to three days. Judge it on cost per purchase, not on one bad afternoon.
- If cost per purchase is holding, step up again. If it has jumped, hold the budget where it is for a few more days rather than cutting it back, because cutting is another change.
- Change nothing else on that ad set while you do this. No new ads, no new audiences, no swapping the optimisation event. Put new things somewhere else.
Where your Black Friday ads go
This is the part people miss. Adding a new ad to an ad set is a significant edit. So if you drop your Black Friday creative into the ad set you spent October scaling, you reset it the week before the sale.
Put the Black Friday offer ads in their own ad set or campaign, and launch it early enough to get some sales under its belt before the big week. Leave the ad set you scaled alone.
If you are already late
If you are reading this in mid November, do not triple the budget on the ad set that works. It is the one thing you cannot afford to lose.
Instead:
- Keep stepping the original up by 20 percent every few days, and leave everything else on it as it is.
- Duplicate it into a separate ad set at the bigger budget you actually want. The duplicate starts learning from zero, but at a bigger budget it gets its 50 purchases faster, especially in Black Friday week when people are buying.
- If the duplicate settles, you have your scale. If it wobbles, your original is still running and still working.
Bottom line
Black Friday does not reward the best product. It rewards the ad account that can take a big budget rise without falling over. That takes weeks of 20 percent steps, which means the real Black Friday deadline is in October.
If you want a second pair of eyes on which of your ad sets is actually ready to scale, and whether your tracking will tell you the truth once the sales start, that is exactly what a teardown call covers. It is also worth running your numbers through the ad budget calculator before you decide how far to scale.
Common questions
How much can I increase my Facebook ads budget without resetting the learning phase?
Meta treats a significant budget change as a significant edit, and a significant edit restarts learning. In practice, raising the budget by about 20 percent or less at a time generally does not reset it, while bigger jumps often do. So if you want to go from 50 dollars a day to 200 dollars a day, you do it in steps of roughly 20 percent, waiting two or three days between each one to confirm your cost per purchase is holding.
When should I start increasing my Facebook ads budget for Black Friday?
Work backwards from the maths. Twenty percent steps every three days take about 24 days to quadruple a budget. Black Friday 2026 is 27 November and most stores start their sale the week before, so to be running four times your normal budget by 20 November you need to start stepping up by 27 October. Start on 10 November and the same steps only get you to about 1.7 times your budget in time.
Does raising the budget on a campaign budget (Advantage campaign budget) reset learning too?
It can. The same idea applies whether the budget sits on the campaign or the ad set: a large change is a significant edit for the ad sets it feeds. Treat a campaign budget exactly like an ad set budget and raise it in steps of about 20 percent.
What counts as a significant edit on Facebook ads?
Changing the targeting, changing the creative or adding a new ad, changing the optimisation event, changing the bid strategy, making a large budget change, and pausing an ad set for seven days or more. Each of those restarts the roughly 50 purchases a week Meta wants to see before it leaves the learning phase. In November, when every sale costs more, that reset is expensive.
I left it too late. How do I scale my Facebook ads quickly before Black Friday?
Do not make one huge jump on the ad set that is working, because that is the ad set you can least afford to reset. Leave it running and keep stepping it up by 20 percent. Put the extra money into a duplicate of it in a separate ad set at the bigger budget. If the duplicate settles, you have your scale. If it wobbles, your original winner is still there, untouched.
Ads live but the numbers do not make sense? That is what I fix.
